I Australien debatteras internetcensur flitigt just nu. Myndigheterna där vill dock inte att folk ska veta att de i sig tämligen värdeneutrala sökorden internet filtering är vanligt förekommande, så de döljer den söktermen från sin hemsida, där den annars skulle funnits med i en lista över vanligt förekommande sökningar. De hävdar att den istället täcks upp av cyber security – ett uttryck som i sammanhanget alltså är extremt värdeladdat till censurförespråkarnas fördel.

Men till och med det verkar vara rent hittepå från statstjänstemännens sida, då andra överlappande söktermer – exempelvis Digital TV och broadcasting – fortfarande kan återfinnas tillsammans.

Nedan kan ni se en video – och läsa texten som videon innehåller – med ett meddelande från Anonymous till Australiens regering. Anonymous är, kan man säga, en oformbar och ständigt skiftande massa av aktivister som agerar mot internetcensur. Mest kända är de antagligen för sitt krig mot scientologerna.

Hello, Kevin Rudd. We are Anonymous. We have been watching you.

It wasn’t very long ago since you were elected, was it? The media hype surrounding your future government back in 2007 was incredible. Many of us Australians saw both you and Barack as beacons of potential to bring end to the conservative culture that currently swamps the USA and Australia. Many of us thought otherwise, and it turns out they were right.

You, as a leader, have failed us. You are bringing an end to what is the greatest link between all people; the one thing that can cross all cultural boundaries, that can bring people together despite ethnicity, political or religious standings, class or nationality; the largest information transfer ever created. You, a democratically elected leader, have decided to do what only the most power-hungry of all tyrants dare:

You have opted to censor the internet.

This is why we, Anonymous, have decided that this censorship plan should be among our primary targets for elimination. We have two demands that we consider central to our ideals:

Firstly: We demand the abolition of the censorship plan proposed by the current government. This includes the removal of all targets on the blacklist, and complete abandonment of any further plans and endeavors by the Australian Government to censor the internet.

Secondly: We demand the resignation of the Australian Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Stephen Conroy. This is a man who has no level of understanding of the topic he is dealing with. This is a man who readily supports the abolition of free speech in exchange for social security. This man and his policies go against everything Australia and the western world stand for. As we see it, Stephen Conroy is completely unsuitable of being a minister of Australia, and as such, we demand his dismissal.

Failure to meet these demands will result in our full-fledged wrath. This is not something you want to happen.

Anonymous is your final obstacle in this battle. We fight where no one else dares to fight. We ruin the lives of animal abusers and bring pedophiles to justice. We destroy the reputation of political and religious leaders alike. Our soldiers currently fight the cult of Scientology and the Iranian government. To us, you are just a step higher. We will create and make freely available methods to render your censorship plan useless, and let these methods be known to the entire Australian public by ways we will not reveal in this message. We will also leak updated versions of the blacklist as often as we can, ensuring that the people who voted you in know what is being withheld from them.

And as your people slowly begin to realize the veil that their own government is draping around them, they will realize that they voted a tyrant into power.

This is when we will have succeeded in all our goals.

Om man inte tilltalas av den nästan lite obehagliga tonen i Anonymous meddelande kan man alltid glädja sig åt att en koalition innefattande bland andra Google, Yahoo och The Australian Library and Information Association också tar upp kampen mot Australiens censureringsförsök – i ett betydligt mer diplomatiskt tonläge…

Jag skrev ju nyligen om iPad och påpekade då några allvarliga problem med den. Idag skriver Aftonbladet om “global kritik mot nya Ipad“:

Kritikerna menar att Apple, tillsammans med dataprogramtillverkarna som företaget jobbar med, har möjlighet att stänga av funktioner, blockera konkurrerande program och censurera nyheter. Företaget kan även ta bort e-böcker och videor utan att meddela ägaren av Ipaden.

Enligt kampanjen äventyrar Apple folks frihet för att öka sin vinst genom att göra en dator vars program är under total centraliserad kontroll.

Exakt vilka kritikerna är nämner man inte, men jag törs satsa en hyfsad slant på att det är Defective By Design och deras namninsamling som åsyftas. Gå gärna dit, och skriv gärna på den. Det här är protesttexten i sin helhet:

Mr. Jobs,

DRM will give Apple and their corporate partners the power to disable features, block competing products (especially free software) censor news, and even delete books, videos, or news stories from users’ computers without notice– using the device’s “always on” network connection.

This past year, we have seen how human rights and democracy protestors can have the technology they use turned against them. By making a computer where every application is under total, centralized control, Apple is endangering freedom to increase profits.

Apple can say they will not abuse this power, but their record of App Store rejections and removals gives us no reason to trust them. The iPad’s unprecedented use of DRM to control all capabilities of a general purpose computer is a dangerous step backward for computing and for media distribution. We demand that Apple remove all DRM from its devices.

Att det utgör ett hot mot den fria marknaden borde räcka för att få liberalt orienterade människor att skriva under, och vänsterfolk borde se det som ett minst lika stort problem då det handlar om ett jättelikt kapitalistiskt företag som skaffar sig den totala kontrollen över ditt informationsflöde.

För att inte tala om möjligheterna sådan funktionalitet skapar för mindre nogräknade regeringar…

Jag skrev nyligen om konstig censur i låtsaslandet USA. Nu har de gjort det igen: ett skoldistrikt i Virginia förbjuder Anne Franks dagbok i skolbiblioteken. Varför? På grund av det här stycket:

There are little folds of skin all over the place, you can hardly find it. The little hole underneath is so terribly small that I simply can’t imagine how a man can get in there, let alone how a whole baby can get out!

Jag kanske bara var ett konstigt barn, men jag minns inte att jag tog någon skada av  det stycket när vi fick läsa den boken i mellanstadiet…

Snacka om moralpanik av det skadligare slaget.

Samtidigt, i låtsaslandet Australien, förbjuder man nu pornografi med småbröstade kvinnor. Bilder som föreställer (eller kan tolkas som att föreställa) minderåriga är nämligen att betrakta som barnporr – oavsett hur gammal modellen är i verkligheten. (Som om inte det var bisarrt nog så gäller det även tecknade bilder av till exempel familjen Simpsons.)

Att sedan en rätt stor del av den vuxna kvinnliga befolkningen har små bröst verkar inte vara något som bekymrar lagstiftarna “down there”…

Som grädde på moset så har de tydligen också ett förbud mot pornografi som innehåller fontänorgasmer. För att det kan innehålla urin, vilket tydligen inte är okej i Australien.

Jag förstår verkligen inte den här hetsen att förbjuda andra från allting som man själv ogillar. Jag gillar inte kiss i samband med sex (eller alls när jag tänker efter) men om det finns folk som gör det så är det väl inte mitt problem? Så länge det är samtyckande vuxna som inte skadar vare sig själva eller andra så kan de väl få syssla med vad sjutton de vill?

Officiellt hemlig men superhypad sedan långt tillbaka offentliggjordes den slutligen, Apples nya produkt: iPad. Det handlar om en så kallad “tablet”-dator, alltså en dator som ser ut som en tunn skärm utan tangentbord. Du kan tänka på iPaden som en förstorad iPhone utan möjlighet att ringa och skicka sms.

Reaktionerna har varit blandade. Vissa menar att det är en jäkligt tuff pryl, andra ser betydligt många fler fel än rätt.

Själv har jag inte hunnit testa den än, men ser redan ett gigantiskt problem: avsaknaden av öppenhet.

Precis som på iPhone kommer man vara bunden till Apples egna App Store. Du kan alltså bara installera program som passerat Apples censurfilter.

“Vad då censur?” kanske du tänker nu. Tja, ett känt exempel är Baby Shaker – ett rätt smaklöst och i mångas ögon provocerande program, om än fullständigt harmlöst. Ett annat är Hottest Girls, ett program som visade halvnakna kvinnor. Ett tredje är Nine Inch Nails-sångaren Trent Reznors program som blev nekat för att man kunde använda det till att lyssna på låten Downward Spiral vars text ansågs för stötande. Eller e-boksläsare som blir förbjudna för att man kan ladda ner Kama Sutra, eller spel vars namn – med en god dos fantasi – kan tolkas som en sexuell anspelning. Exemplen på anledningar att ogilla App Store är många.

Grundpoängen är att den som äger en pryl ska själv ha rätten att bestämma vad han eller hon vill installera på den. Inte några moralkärringar från Apple.

Apple verkar dessutom ha anammat Microsofts strategi att låsa in sina användare så att man inte har något annat val än att stanna kvar som kund.

Bara en sån sak som att den saknar USB-portar. Man kan till exempel köpa till ett vanligt datortangentbord  – men då måste man köpa ett särskilt sådant från Apple. Vanliga tangentbord med USB-kablar duger inte. Det finns ingen rimlig anledning att konstruera en tablet på det viset mer än att man vill ta bort sina användares valfrihet. De vill tvinga oss att köpa deras prylar och ingen annans.

Ägna sedan en tanke åt iBook Store, där man ska kunna köpa e-böcker. Det verkar nu som om dessa e-böcker kommer vara lika låsta till en specifik plattform som när man köper böcker till Amazons “Kindle” – du kan alltså inte läsa en bok som du köpt för dina surt förvärvade slantar om du råkar bestämma dig för att prova en tablet-dator eller e-boksläsare från en annan tillverkare.

Är det en utveckling som du känner dig bekväm med? Känns det inte som ett rätt stort steg bakåt när man jämför med hur en pappersbok fungerar?

Holmes Wilson från Free Software Foundation uttalar sig på följande sätt:

This is a huge step backward in the history of computing. If the first personal computers required permission from the manufacturer for each new program or new feature, the history of computing would be as dismally totalitarian as the milieu in Apple’s famous Super Bowl ad. The iPad has DRM writ large: you can only install what Apple says you may, and ‘computing’ goes consumer mainstream — no more twiddling, just sit back, spend your money, and watch the show — while we allow you to.

Som jämförelse till inlåsningsstrategin kan nämnas att Google driver ett särskilt projekt – Data Liberation Front – för att underlätta för sina användare att byta till en annan tjänsteleverantör om de så vill. De tycker att användare ska stanna kvar för att de själva vill. Visst låter det betydligt mycket trevligare?

Som tur är verkar det i alla fall finnas alternativ på väg. MSI till exempel planerar att lansera en tablet-dator som är baserad på det öppna mobil-operativsystemet Android:

That means the MSI will multitask of course, and Flash support in Android should be a given by launch time (though that isn’t certain). It has a camera. It’s running on an Nvidia Tegra2 chip which Ars Technica suggests puts it on par with the iPad’s A4 as far as computing horsepower. And of course Android doesn’t live in a walled garden.

Det ryktas om fler tablet-datorer med Android som bas också. Jag håller tummarna…

1. Fredrik Lindström skriver på Aftonbladet om kopiors värde.

Han tar bland annat upp det faktum att ingen “kreatör” jobbar i ett vakum, vi är alla beroende av arvet från våra föregångare för att kunna skapa:

Metallica har dessutom inte skapat sin musik själva.

De står, liksom alla andra i deras genre, i ett enormt beroendeförhållande till en lång musikalisk tradition av blues, rock, hårdrock och metall – utan den vore de inte ett smack.

De stora intäkterna i den traditionen har ingen rätt att roffa åt sig, precis som andra traditioner jämte språk och kultur aldrig kan vara annat än allmän egendom.

2. Det spanska EU-ordförandeskapet förklarar krig mot verkligheten.

Spanjorerna vill ge Internet “förmågan att glömma”. Falkvinge kommenterar träffsäkert:

Nätet är infrastruktur. Nätet är inte mer än det som dess invånare, alltså människorna på nätet, kommunicerar mellan varandra.

Översatt från byråkratiska betyder Spaniens utspel alltså antingen “människor ska kunna tvingas att glömma” eller att “vi ska kunna hindra människor från att utbyta vissa tankar och idéer”.

Det är förmodligen det mest skrämmande utspelet hittills, och helt oförenligt med Europakonventionen om mänskliga rättigheter.

3. Anna Troberg skriver om varför en röst på Piratpartiet är mindre bortkastad för henne än en röst på något av riksdagspartierna.

Traditionella partier försöker att täcka in allt i sina program. Problemet är att de sedan väljer att fokusera på vissa saker och glatt förhandlar bort andra aspekter. Det handlade alltså inte om vad jag personligen var beredd att offra. Det valet togs åt mig, lång ovanför mitt huvud. I värsta fall innebar det att man förhandlade bort mina hjärtefrågor till förmån för de frågor jag inte alls sympatiserade med. I min värld är det ett lotteri med en alldeles för hög insats och jag ville inte vara med och spela det spelet.

Det ska inte handla om att jag som sympatisör ska sitta och hålla tummarna för att min röst ska göra det jag ville att den skulle göra och inte det helt motsatta. Jag vill veta var min röst hamnar.Jag anser att jag har en rätt att veta det.

Piratpartiets lösning på detta problem är att inte bre sig för tunt. Vi fokuserar på några huvudfrågor och kör stenhårt på dem. Det betyder att man aldrig köper grisen i säcken. Man vet vad man får. Hela vår existens bygger på det. Sjabblar vi, så kommer vi inte att få, och förtjänar inte heller, folk som röstar på oss igen.

4. Sammy Nordström förklarar lite kortfattat vad som är skillnaden mellan Sverigedemokraterna och Piratpartiet.

Till exempel:

När det gäller Sverigedemokraterna kan vi konstatera att de är Piratpartiets ideologiska motsats. Där de vill ha enkelriktning och enfald vill vi ha variation och mångfald. Vad de vill konservera vill vi utveckla. Medans de bygger murar försöker vi riva dem. Där de ser hot ser vi möjligheter. Men framförallt, vi ser ett uppenbart samband mellan isolation och stagnation.

Rent sakfrågepolitiskt ställer vi oss undrande till deras ambitioner att inrätta jourhavande dygnetrunt-domstolar, arbetsläger för straffångar och återgå till hur Sverige såg ut under andra världskriget rent allmänt. De står nämligen för väldigt mycket mer än bara begränsad invandring, något som ofta kommer i skymundan i media.

5. Henrik Alexandersson skriver om att minst en socialdemokrat i riksdagen vill förbjuda anonyma kontantkort till mobiltelefoner.

Falkvinge (igen) kommenterar:

Som Hax skriver: anonymitet är inte ett brott. Tvärtom är det en förutsättning för en fungerande demokrati.

6. Storbritannien planerar totalitär övervakning av Internet.

I den föreslagna Digital Economy Bill finns bland annat att läsa:

“Ministern kan när som helst genom ett beslut kräva att en ISP inför tekniska begränsningar [inklusive stänga av abbonemanget] baserat på
(a) en utvärdering av OFCOM eller
(b) vilket skäl som helst.”

Smaka på den ni – ministern kan ge order om mycket allvarliga ingrepp av vilket skäl som helst.

Den som är bekant med begrepp som “rättssäkerhet” och “demokratisk process” bör få andnöd vid blotta tanken…

1. Fångar på ett fängelse i Wisconsin, USA får inte spela Dungeons & Dragons för att det “påminner om gängstruktur“.

De ansvariga för förbudet menar att spelet uppmuntrar till gängkultur eftersom en “spelledare” (på engelska “Dungeon Master”) tar “makten” i spelet och ger direktiv till de övriga spelarna.

Japp, mycket riktigt är det för dumt för att ens bevärdiga med en kommentar.

2. Elever på en skola i Kalifornien, USA har fått sin tillgång till vanliga ordböcker strypt på grund av att ordet “oralsex” finns med.

En förälder upptäckte ordet och blev upprörd. Föräldern klagade till skolan. Skolan tar bort böckerna ur biblioteket.

Japp, mycket riktigt är det för dumt för att ens bevärdiga med en kommentar. Egentligen. Men PZ Meyers får sista ordet i den här bloggposten ändå:

Stupid mothers are a problem. Craven administrators are a bigger problem.

Det förra inlägget här på min blogg var en återpublicering av ett protestupprop mot Irlands nyinförda lag mot hädelse. De 25 citaten är nog så läsvärda i sig, men för att ytterligare understryka vikten av att reagera över den här typen av utveckling så vill jag gärna förklara lite närmare vad det handlar om.

Under the proposal, which is part of a wider defamation bill, “a person who publishes or utters blasphemous matter shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable upon conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding €100,000.”

“Blasphemous matter” is defined as matter “that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby causing outrage among a substantial number of the adherents of that religion; and he or she intends, by the publication of the matter concerned, to cause such outrage.”

Etthundratusen euro motsvarar alltså drygt en miljon kronor med dagens växelkurs. En miljon kronor i böter för att till exempel publicera den i mina ögon fantastiska Jesus Christ – In The Name Of The Gun. Eller för att, om man vill vara lite mer allvarlig, bara säga någonting som religiösa människor av något slag finner förolämpande.

Muhammedkarikatyrerna hade definitivt varit förbjudna. Björks citat “The Buddhists say we come back as animals and they refer to them as lesser beings. Well, animals aren’t lesser beings, they’re just like us. So I say fuck the Buddhists.” ligger definitivt i farozonen. Och så vidare.

Vad det i förlängningen innebär är att det kommer bli mycket svårare – och framför allt farligare – att kritisera religioner och religiösa idéer. Det är antagligen inte så det är tänkt, men på samma sätt som upphovsrättslagstiftningen gång på gång används för att censurera meningsmotståndare kommer den här lagstiftningen att missbrukas regelbundet. Det lär inte dröja länge innan det första fallet dyker upp.

För övrigt kan man ju fråga sig vad det är som gör att religiösa grupper överhuvudtaget ska särbehandlas på det här viset. Varför inte stifta liknande lagar som förbjuder folk att förolämpa politiska uppfattningar? Jag som pirat skulle till exempel kunna ta mycket illa upp över att bli jämförd med en gräsklippartjuv.

Svaret är rätt uppenbart: sådana inskränkningar av yttrandefriheten är otänkbara om man vill kunna föra någon slags konstruktiv diskussion om någonting överhuvudtaget.

Visserligen kan jag tycka att den där gräsklippartesen är fruktansvärt okonstruktiv, men det är inte det viktiga i sammanhanget. Poängen är att man måste få säga vad man tycker och tänker alldeles oavsett hur många som kan tänkas ta illa upp. Det måste gälla i politiska sammanhang, och det måste gälla i religiösa sammanhang.

Så varför har man då i ett hyfsat modernt land, tio år in på 2000-talet, bestämt sig för att införa medeltidslagar?

The background is this: Under Article 40 of the Irish Constitution, blasphemy is an offence which shall be punishable in accordance with law. In 1999, the Supreme Court found that the existing law against blasphemy was unenforceable, as there was no definition of blasphemy.

Last year the Oireachtas committee on the Constitution recommended removing the reference to blasphemy from the Constitution. Instead, this proposed new law creates a legal definition of blasphemy, in order to make the offence punishable in law.

Så där ja. Istället för att modernisera lagen så att den passar ihop med ett fritt och öppet samhälle så bestämmer man sig för att ta tre steg bakåt i samhällsutvecklingen. Ett mycket dåligt val, om jag får säga vad jag tycker. Och det får jag ju. Än så länge.

From today, 1 January 2010, the new Irish blasphemy law becomes operational, and we begin our campaign to have it repealed. Blasphemy is now a crime punishable by a €25,000 fine. The new law defines blasphemy as publishing or uttering matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby intentionally causing outrage among a substantial number of adherents of that religion, with some defences permitted.

This new law is both silly and dangerous. It is silly because medieval religious laws have no place in a modern secular republic, where the criminal law should protect people and not ideas. And it is dangerous because it incentivises religious outrage, and because Islamic States led by Pakistan are already using the wording of this Irish law to promote new blasphemy laws at UN level.

We believe in the golden rule: that we have a right to be treated justly, and that we have a responsibility to treat other people justly. Blasphemy laws are unjust: they silence people in order to protect ideas. In a civilised society, people have a right to to express and to hear ideas about religion even if other people find those ideas to be outrageous.

Campaign begins to repeal the Irish blasphemy law

We ask Fianna Fail and the Green Party to repeal their anachronistic blasphemy law, as part of the revision of the Defamation Act that is included within the Act. We ask them to hold a referendum to remove the reference to blasphemy from the Irish Constitution.

We also ask all TDs and Senators to support a referendum to remove references to God from the Irish Constitution, including the clauses that prevent atheists from being appointed as President of Ireland or as a Judge without swearing a religious oath asking God to direct them in their work.

List of 25 Blasphemous Quotes Published by Atheist Ireland

1. Jesus Christ, when asked if he was the son of God, in Matthew 26:64: “Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” According to the Christian Bible, the Jewish chief priests and elders and council deemed this statement by Jesus to be blasphemous, and they sentenced Jesus to death for saying it.

2. Jesus Christ, talking to Jews about their God, in John 8:44: “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.” This is one of several chapters in the Christian Bible that can give a scriptural foundation to Christian anti-Semitism. The first part of John 8, the story of “whoever is without sin cast the first stone”, was not in the original version, but was added centuries later. The original John 8 is a debate between Jesus and some Jews. In brief, Jesus calls the Jews who disbelieve him sons of the Devil, the Jews try to stone him, and Jesus runs away and hides.

3. Muhammad, quoted in Hadith of Bukhari, Vol 1 Book 8 Hadith 427: “May Allah curse the Jews and Christians for they built the places of worship at the graves of their prophets.” This quote is attributed to Muhammad on his death-bed as a warning to Muslims not to copy this practice of the Jews and Christians. It is one of several passages in the Koran and in Hadith that can give a scriptural foundation to Islamic anti-Semitism, including the assertion in Sura 5:60 that Allah cursed Jews and turned some of them into apes and swine.

4. Mark Twain, describing the Christian Bible in Letters from the Earth, 1909: “Also it has another name – The Word of God. For the Christian thinks every word of it was dictated by God. It is full of interest. It has noble poetry in it; and some clever fables; and some blood-drenched history; and some good morals; and a wealth of obscenity; and upwards of a thousand lies… But you notice that when the Lord God of Heaven and Earth, adored Father of Man, goes to war, there is no limit. 6. Randy Newman, God’s Song, 1972: “And the Lord said: I burn down your cities – how blind you must be. I take from you your children, and you say how blessed are we. You all must be crazy to put your faith in me. That’s why I love mankind.”

7. James Kirkup, The Love That Dares to Speak its Name, 1976: “While they prepared the tomb I kept guard over him. His mother and the Magdalen had gone to fetch clean linen to shroud his nakedness. I was alone with him… I laid my lips around the tip of that great cock, the instrument of our salvation, our eternal joy. The shaft, still throbbed, anointed with death’s final ejaculation.” This extract is from a poem that led to the last successful blasphemy prosecution in Britain, when Denis Lemon was given a suspended prison sentence after he published it in the now-defunct magazine Gay News. In 2002, a public reading of the poem, on the steps of St. Martin-in-the-Fields church in Trafalgar Square, failed to lead to any prosecution. In 2008, the British Parliament abolished the common law offences of blasphemy and blasphemous libel.

8. Matthias, son of Deuteronomy of Gath, in Monty Python’s Life of Brian, 1979: “Look, I had a lovely supper, and all I said to my wife was that piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah.”

9. Rev Ian Paisley MEP to the Pope in the European Parliament, 1988: “I denounce you as the Antichrist.” Paisley’s website describes the Antichrist as being “a liar, the true son of the father of lies, the original liar from the beginning… he will imitate Christ, a diabolical imitation, Satan transformed into an angel of light, which will deceive the world.”

10. Conor Cruise O’Brien, 1989: “In the last century the Arab thinker Jamal al-Afghani wrote: ‘Every Muslim is sick and his only remedy is in the Koran.’ Unfortunately the sickness gets worse the more the remedy is taken.”

11. Frank Zappa, 1989: “If you want to get together in any exclusive situation and have people love you, fine – but to hang all this desperate sociology on the idea of The Cloud-Guy who has The Big Book, who knows if you’ve been bad or good – and cares about any of it – to hang it all on that, folks, is the chimpanzee part of the brain working.”

Salman Rushdie, 1990: “The idea of the sacred is quite simply one of the most conservative notions in any culture, because it seeks to turn other ideas – uncertainty, progress, change – into crimes.” In 1989, Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran issued a fatwa ordering Muslims to kill Rushdie because of blasphemous passages in Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses.

13. Bjork, 1995: “I do not believe in religion, but if I had to choose one it would be Buddhism. It seems more livable, closer to men… I’ve been reading about reincarnation, and the Buddhists say we come back as animals and they refer to them as lesser beings. Well, animals aren’t lesser beings, they’re just like us. So I say fuck the Buddhists.”

14. Amanda Donohoe on her role in the Ken Russell movie Lair of the White Worm, 1995: “Spitting on Christ was a great deal of fun. I can’t embrace a male god who has persecuted female sexuality throughout the ages, and that persecution still goes on today all over the world.”

15. George Carlin, 1999: “Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there’s an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever ’til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He’s all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can’t handle money! 17. Jesus Christ, in Jerry Springer The Opera, 2003: “Actually, I’m a bit gay.” In 2005, the Christian Institute tried to bring a prosecution against the BBC for screening Jerry Springer the Opera, but the UK courts refused to issue a summons.

18. Tim Minchin, Ten-foot Cock and a Few Hundred Virgins, 2005: “So you’re gonna live in paradise, With a ten-foot cock and a few hundred virgins, So you’re gonna sacrifice your life, For a shot at the greener grass, And when the Lord comes down with his shiny rod of judgment, He’s gonna kick my heathen ass.”

Richard Dawkins in The God Delusion, 2006: “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.” In 2007 Turkish publisher Erol Karaaslan was charged with the crime of insulting believers for publishing a Turkish translation of The God Delusion. He was acquitted in 2008, but another charge was brought in 2009. Karaaslan told the court that “it is a right to criticise religions and beliefs as part of the freedom of thought and expression.”

20. Pope Benedict XVI quoting a 14th century Byzantine emperor, 2006: “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.” This statement has already led to both outrage and condemnation of the outrage. The Organisation of the Islamic Conference, the world’s largest Muslim body, said it was a “character assassination of the prophet Muhammad”. The Malaysian Prime Minister said that “the Pope must not take lightly the spread of outrage that has been created.” Pakistan’s foreign Ministry spokesperson said that “anyone who describes Islam as a religion as intolerant encourages violence”. The European Commission said that “reactions which are disproportionate and which are tantamount to rejecting freedom of speech are unacceptable.”

21. Christopher Hitchens in God is not Great, 2007: “There is some question as to whether Islam is a separate religion at all… Islam when examined is not much more than a rather obvious and ill-arranged set of plagiarisms, helping itself from earlier books and traditions as occasion appeared to require… It makes immense claims for itself, invokes prostrate submission or ‘surrender’ as a maxim to its adherents, and demands deference and respect from nonbelievers into the bargain. There is nothing-absolutely nothing-in its teachings that can even begin to justify such arrogance and presumption.”

22. PZ Myers, on the Roman Catholic communion host, 2008: “You would not believe how many people are writing to me, insisting that these horrible little crackers (they look like flattened bits of styrofoam) are literally pieces of their god, and that this omnipotent being who created the universe can actually be seriously harmed by some third-rate liberal intellectual at a third-rate university… However, inspired by an old woodcut of Jews stabbing the host, I thought of a simple, quick thing to do: I pierced it with a rusty nail (I hope Jesus’s tetanus shots are up to date). And then I simply threw it in the trash, followed by the classic, decorative items of trash cans everywhere, old coffeegrounds and a banana peel.”

23. Ian O’Doherty, 2009: “(If defamation of religion was illegal) it would be a crime for me to say that the notion of transubstantiation is so ridiculous that even a small child should be able to see the insanity and utter physical impossibility of a piece of bread and some wine somehow taking on corporeal form. It would be a crime for me to say that Islam is a backward desert superstition that has no place in modern, enlightened Europe and it would be a crime to point out that Jewish settlers in Israel who believe they have a God given right to take the land are, frankly, mad. All the above assertions will, no doubt, offend someone or other.”

24. Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, 2009: “Whether a person is atheist or any other, there is in fact in my view something not totally human if they leave out the transcendent… we call it God… I think that if you leave that out you are not fully human.” Because atheism is not a religion, the Irish blasphemy law does not protect atheists from abusive and insulting statements about their fundamental beliefs. While atheists are not seeking such protection, we include the statement here to point out that it is discriminatory that this law does not hold all citizens equal.

25. Dermot Ahern, Irish Minister for Justice, introducing his blasphemy law at an Oireachtas Justice Committee meeting, 2009, and referring to comments made about him personally: “They are blasphemous.” Deputy Pat Rabbitte replied: “Given the Minister’s self-image, it could very well be that we are blaspheming,” and Minister Ahern replied: “Deputy Rabbitte says that I am close to the baby Jesus, I am so pure.” So here we have an Irish Justice Minister joking about himself being blasphemed, at a parliamentary Justice Committee discussing his own blasphemy law, that could make his own jokes illegal.

Finally, as a bonus, Micheal Martin, Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, opposing attempts by Islamic States to make defamation of religion a crime at UN level, 2009: “We believe that the concept of defamation of religion is not consistent with the promotion and protection of human rights. It can be used to justify arbitrary limitations on, or the denial of, freedom of expression. Indeed, Ireland considers that freedom of expression is a key and inherent element in the manifestation of freedom of thought and conscience and as such is complementary to freedom of religion or belief.” Just months after Minister Martin made this comment, his colleague Dermot Ahern introduced Ireland’s new blasphemy law.

Ingen kan ha missat att det pågår en smärre revolt i Iran just nu. Jag är själv inte särskilt insatt i var de olika kandidaterna står politiskt, men att det nuvarande styret inte är det mest demokratiska i mänsklighetens historia har varit tydligt sedan länge och sättet de hanterar den nuvarande situationen på gör ingenting för att ändra på den bilden.

SvD skriver idag om att “Nätaktivister säkrar internet för iranierna“, och Christopher Kullenberg skriver lite mer utförligt om samma sak på Newsmill. Bland de nätaktivister som det pratas om återfinns The Pirate Bay, som för tillfället döpts om till The Persian Bay och länkar till en kampanjsida för fri kommunikation i Iran.

Samtidigt finns det de som fortfarande påstår att vi pirater “bara vill kunna tanka gratis”. Man undrar när det ska sjunka in på allvar att det faktiskt är lite större än så.
